Shortly after 4 a.m., officers were dispatched to an address in the 15600 block of 65th Street where a man reported his vehicle stolen. Before the dispatcher could finish giving details of the call, an officer in the area of 67th Street and Lackman Road had spotted the vehicle.

The officer followed the vehicle into the Prairie Lakes Apartments in the 6700 block of Lackman Road, where the driver reportedly attempted to elude the officer. Officers found the vehicle abandoned and saw the suspect running away from it near the apartment building at 6823 Lackman Road.

Radio traffic indicated that the suspect was a black male. He was last seen running south in the 6800 block of Lackman Road. He was described as wearing a black jacket and dark blue jeans. The victim told police that the suspect was armed with a gun and took his car keys from him, then sped away in the vehicle. It is unclear if the victim was inside his vehicle when the suspect approached.

Officers quickly established a large perimeter around the apartment complex and into nearby neighborhoods to the south and east. A K-9 officer was called in to respond from off-duty.

The K-9 officer searched for nearly an hour throughout the southeast side of the apartment complex and into the neighborhood just east of the apartment complex. According to radio traffic, officers searched as far east as the 6800 block of Oakview Street.

Officers disbanded the perimeter just after 5:15 a.m. At that time, a suspect had not been located.
